Meal times can be such a rush, frenzy, irritating time. You stayed out too long enjoying the day, kids are whinnying, you have nothing ready for dinner, and are a little hangry yourself. Boxed meals are a no go for your family too. What to make in a hurry?! How about Homemade Hamburger Helper?!
What you need
- 1 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 chopped onion
- salt & pepper to taste
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1-2 T flour or starch
- 1 c milk (nut or alternative milk works too)
- 2 c cooked noodles
You can easily double this recipe for the bigger family, even double just the beef if you have a higher protein consuming family.
I have substituted the flour for gluten free flour or even potato or arrowroot starch and it works just fine. Basically the flour is soaking up the extra juices and binding them to the milk to make a delicious gravy.
For the milk if dairy is a problem in your house, substitute any nut or even oat milk. Cashew milk makes a very creamy gravy, but it tastes good with any of them.
To make the meal complete, add peas, green beans or lettuce salad on the side. You can also use veggie noodles as the noodles in the actual dish for an one pot meal. Our favorite veggie noodles are Cybele's Free to Eat noodles.
Directions:
- Brown ground beef, with onion and garlic, until no longer pink.
- While beef in browning, cook noodles in salted water
- Once browned, add flour to soak up the drippings. Stir then wisk in milk.
- Mix cooked drained noodles into the beef mixture.
- Serve Hot
